2026 Emerging Literary Translators Anthology now available – including Faroese translation by Kata Veress

For the second time Faroese was a part of National Centre for Writing Emerging Literary Translator mentorship programme. Over a period of six months, the programme matches experienced translators with emerging translators to work together on practical translation projects. The mentor advises the mentee with a view to developing the mentee’s craft, while working on a chosen text or texts.

The program began on 1st October 2025 and ended on 31st March 2026 with a final showcase. Marita Thomsen acted as mentor for this programme for the second time. This time the mentee was Kata Veress. Marita and Kata worked on translating a variety of texts and on developing relationships with industry professionals and publishers. A sample of Kata’s translation of Ikki fyrr enn tá by Oddfríður Marni Rasmussen was included in the final anthology of work from the programme.

Kata Veress is a literary and technical translator with a keen linguistic interest, juggling with words in several languages. She also works as an editor for Ø Press, an independent Hungarian publisher specialising in Nordic literature, and Drei Raben, a German-language magazine for Hungarian culture. Whilst emerging as a literary translator into English and German, her translations into Hungarian span contemporary Faroese, Icelandic, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, and German prose, poetry, non-fiction, as well as children’s literature. As an avid singer, she is also intrigued by the musicality of words and texts’ melody.

Marita Thomsen is a UK-based Faroese translator and conference interpreter, who has years of experience in translating works by Faroese authors into English, including Jógvan Isaksen, Sólrún Michelsen, Bárður Oskarsson, Beinir Bergsson and Sissal Kampmann.
