March 25 is the Faroese Mother Language Day

Today is the Faroese Mother Language Day — celebrated on the birthday of V.U. Hammershaimb, born 25 March 1819. V.U. Hammershaimb is the pioneering linguist who created the modern Faroese orthography and gave the language a unified written form.

The history of Faroese is a story of resilience and cultural continuity. For centuries, the language lived mainly through oral tradition — ballads, sagas, and storytelling — even while Danish dominated school and administration. It wasn’t until the 19th century that Faroese gained a standardized written form through Hammershaimb’s work collecting folklore, studying dialects, and establishing an etymological spelling system.

Now Faroese is alive, evolving, and proudly spoken. Today we celebrate the language that carries our stories.
