Gunnar Hoydal in memoriam

Gunnar Hoydal in memoriam

It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to Gunnar Hoydal, one of the most prominent voices of Faroese literature. Gunnar Hoydal was an architect by profession and his legacy will be appreciated by future generations. He played an equally significant role as an author, translator and patron of the arts. With his outstanding translations he gave Faroese children access to Harry Potter, Huckleberry Finn and Winnie the Pooh, to mention a few. His semi-autobiographical novel "Undir suðurstjørnum" from 1992 was published in English in 2003 and described by Fay Weldon as "A major work of literature ". Gunnar Hoydal was granted the M.A. Jacobsen Literature Award in 1982 and was a three time nominee for the Nordic Council Literature Prize.

Gunnar Hoydal will be remembered with gratitude.
