Lív Maria Róadóttir Jæger published in English

Lív Maria Róadóttir Jæger’s 2020 poetry collection Eg skrivi á vátt pappír has been released by British publisher Francis Boutle Publishers in an English translation by Bradley Harmon.

I Write on Wet Paper / Eg skrivi á vátt pappír is a bilingual publication that also features a foreword by Harmon.  Over eight sections, the poetry collection deals with writing to understand relationships and the relationship between your own thoughts and the thoughts of others, and about understanding yourself as a child, a young woman and a human being participating in the lives of others. The poetry collection received critical acclaim upon its release, was nominated for the 2021 Nordic Council Literature Prize and has been published in Danish, Canadian French, and now English.

Jæger and Harmon both appeared in a panel discussion in London last month, alongside Faroese writer Beinir Bergsson and translator Marita Thomsen, whose work Sólgarðurin / The Suntrap has also been published in English by Francis Boutle. During the event, Jæger and Harmon took turns reading excerpts from the 15 Phenomenologies section in Faroese and English respectively, before discussing creative writing in Faroese and translating literature from Faroese into English.

Jæger, born in 1981, is a Faroese writer, poet, and Ph.D. Scholar in Creative Writing at the University of the Faroe Islands. She has been an active voice on the Faroese literary scene for over a decade, with her first published prosaic works appearing in the periodical Vencil in 2013. Since then, she has released an LP poem recording, further texts for periodicals, lyrics and written two poetry collections. For Eg skrivi á vátt pappír, she received the 2020 M. A. Jacobsen’s Literature Prize from Tórshavn City Council and was nominated for the 2021 Nordic Council Literature Prize. Her third poetry collection, BÓK, will be published by Eksil this autumn.

Harmon, born in 1994, is an American translator, scholar of Nordic and German literature and writer based in Berlin, Germany. He is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Modern Languages & Literatures at John Hopkins University, and currently a guest researcher at the Department of Northern European Studies at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Harmon has been an Emerging Translator Mentee in Swedish with the American Literary Translators Association, as well as in Faroese with the British National Centre for Writing, mentored by Marita Thomsen. For the mentorship, Harmon worked primarily with the 1973 Faroese novel Frænir eitur ormurin by Jens Pauli Heinesen. His literary translations into English span from Swedish, German, Norwegian, Danish – and Faroese.
