New book on Faroese literature from 1950 onwards

New book on Faroese literature from 1950 onwards

Faroese writer and literary historian Jógvan Isaksen has released the second volume of his Faroese literature history Færøsk litteraturs historie, written in Danish and published by Marselius Forlag. The first volume was released in 2017 and covered the time period 1298-1950, and thus explores the rich,  cultural heritage in myths and legends, passed orally between generations of Faroe Islanders. These medieval accounts played an important part in shaping Faroese written language in the 19th century, which paved the way for the development of modern Faroese literature.

By 1950, a modest number of Faroese books has been published, but more and more authors and books start emerging in the next few decades. Isaksen’s new book dives into the works of Faroese writers, who made their debut between 1950 and 2000, whilst also shedding light on the historical contexts of these works and the time, in which they were written.

The writers, whose works are explored in the second volume, include Jens Pauli Heinesen, Rói Patursson, Hanus Kamban, Gunnar Hoydal, Oddvør Johansen, Jóanes Nielsen, Tóroddur Poulsen, Sólrún Michelsen, Marjun Syderbø Kjelnæs, Katrin Ottarsdóttir and many more.
