The Suntrap / Sólgarðurin reprinted
Francis Boutle Publishers have revealed that The Suntrap / Sólgarðurin by Beinir Bergsson, translated into English by Marita Thomsen, is being reprinted!
The English edition of the critically acclaimed poetry collection was published in the United Kingdom last year as a dual English-original Faroese version. Sólgarðurin is the Faroe Islands’ first explicit collection of queer poetry, and Bergsson uses a variety of literary nature that is new to the local environment. The poems are juxtaposed with youthful, unabashed sexuality and melancholy reminiscence.
Sólgarðurin is Beinir Bergsson’s second poetry collection, succeeding Tann lítli drongurin og beinagrindin from 2017. Bergsson’s poetry has been translated and published in Danish, Icelandic and Greek, in addition to English. The rights to Sólgarðurin have also been sold to Sweden. Sólgarðurin was nominated for the 2022 Nordic Council Literature Prize.
Marita Thomsen is a translator and interpreter born in the Faroe Islands. Her translations into English of Faroese and Spanish authors – including poetry, noir fiction, children’s books and plays – have been published in the UK, Canada, US, the Faroes and online. She is a mentor on the National Centre for Writing’s Emerging Translator Mentorship Programme, which will be offering a mentorship in translating Faroese literature into English for a second consecutive year. The programme will open for applications on 1 August with a deadline on 31 August.
