New Hungarian translation
The second novel in the Nornan spinnur trilogy by author Sólrún Michelsen has been published in Hungary by publishing house Polar Könyvek. Ein annar er gull – or A sors fonala – Arany in Hungarian – has been translated from Faroese by Kata Veress.
The first novel was published earlier this year, with the third and final installment set for a release this winter in Hungary. Both the writer and the translator appeared together at a book launch at this year’s International Book Festival in Budapest earlier this month.
The novel picks up from where the first book concludes. Shots are fired on the Faroe Bank Channel at the smack, where a husband is onboard. However – and historically correct – all lives onboard the smacks, which were shot at on the Bank that day, were saved.
The couple and their children continue their daily lives, but he has been mentally wounded by the incident. Life, which was tough before, now becomes even tougher.
Sólrún describes the everyday conditions of the common fisherman’s household during this time, and when bad luck strikes.
The war reaches its end, and Sólrún guides us through some of the fates unfolding at the onset of the Spanish flu and tuberculosis.
Part of it is marriage, which is built on security rather than love, and how this love bursts at the seams, when true love with unadulterated eroticism invades. Self-reproach for breaking religious law. Can you be whole as a woman, wife, and mother, if you fall in live with a man, while the one you are married to ails?
